Open Monument Day

Resilient Heritage. That is the thought-provoking theme of Open Monument Day Wageningen (OMDW). In this anniversary year – the OMDW committee has been organising an attractive programme in and around our built heritage for 35 years – the focus is on the resilience of our monuments in Wageningen.

Some buildings have been part of the cityscape for centuries. They have therefore weathered wars and other calamities, yet continue to move with the times. And even today, there are challenges to be faced. Think, for example, of climate change and the housing shortage. How do we protect what is dear to us from the wrecking ball? Naturally, the focus is on the monuments that, despite potential adversity, still stand proudly. But we must not forget the people who make this possible: those who ‘put their hands to the buildings’. The enthusiasts who, with great love, effort and investment, preserve their historic buildings and ensure they are fit for the future. In short, during Wageningen’s Open Monument Day, many owners of historic buildings will once again selflessly open their doors to share this love with the public.
